Can I be in jail for not paying a claim on car insurance sent?

I was in a collision without insurance this year. The bill was $ 500 and I was not able to pay. My phone has been for a few months, and when I turned back, I got a voicemail saying that I am with court papers (of course I get served deleted the message and lost the number, FML). I have never been sued, so I do not really know what to expect.

I want to do this right and can pay $ 500. What are my options? Can I really be sent to prison?

Please, please, please do not give me your holier than thou, Perfect American Citizen answers (if I had to pay the money for such things, would I like you too). I need facts, please.
Theoretically, you can be sent to prison – but in reality you are not – because you can not earn money in prison to repay debt.

What happens is that your license is suspended and connected to your wages, or if you get assigned to community service, but the product that you deserve to go to the person you need.
