Can we file a auto insurance claim after 6 months?

My husband was in a small accident during a rainstorm in which the car slid off the road into a ditch during a rainstorm. No one else was involved and no police report was filed. He has procrastinated long enough and I want my car fixed….Is it too late? We have Geico.

    Doubtfull, call your agent.

It probably varies from state to state, but you usually must file a proof of claim within 91 days of the accident. You might be out of luck.

If it wasn’t reported previously how is Geico to know when it happened?. Just tell them you were thinking of paying to get it repaired yourself, but was to expensive and now you want to file a claim. Tell them it occurred about a month ago.

If you HAD a local agent, this might be something that you could sit down with and discuss.

I would call GEICO. Be sure to have SOMETHING that will document WHEN the accident happened…..and take care of it yourself. Don’t be surprised as to the outcome.

Waiting SIX MONTHS is a little ridiculous!

Good luck adn I hope this helps!

Don’t lie about when it happened as one here suggests. They can tell if damage is new or not and it is just stupid to lie about it. They may pay, they may not. All you can do is call and explain what happened and when…truthfully.

You can. They will, of course, wonder why it took you so long to discuss it with them. Unless you have collision coverage it won’t be covered, and if you do and they accept the claim, it will be less your deductible amount.

Call Geico and start the process. Be prepared to be given the run around, and realize up front you will not speak to the same person each time you call and you will have to explain the whole thing all over again.

But they are the only ones who can say yes or no. Good luck.

First of all, read your policy.
Some policies state you have to report the loss w/in a certain timeperiod, Like no later than 30, 60 or 90 days.
If your policy has that condition, its too late.

If your policy does not have that condition, go ahead and report it. Your company will investigate the loss to confirm the date and facts. If everything adds up they would cover the damages.

You will be subject to pay your deductible ,and for any additional damages that may have been caused by you driving a damaged car for the last 6 months.

Why did you not report it sooner?
