My car was stolen from work tonight (3rd time this year :-/ ), and I’m curious what I should do.
I just recently married, so me and my wife just started a policy under State Farm for auto insurance, and we have comprehinsive coverage. At the same time, my parents still have my car under their insurance (they havn’t gotten around to dropping my car), and they have comprehensive coverage on it as well.
Because I’m still under their insurance, which was should I go? Can I use both insurances? Should I use my parents since they will be cancelling in a few weeks anyways? Assuming the deductable is the same either way, what should I do?
**I dont’ know what shape the car is in now, (they havn’t found it yet), but last time they pretty much completely stripped it, so I’m assuming similar results this time.
Each policy would most likely contain wording that says if you received loss coverage from another source, they will deny your claim. If you collected both that would be straight up insurance fraud. Plus the fact that there are three thefts in one year would make any insurance agent look closer at the whole deal. So check the fine print on each policy.
No one only. They cross match.
You may find that as the car is insured under two policies neither will pay but at best each will pay half the claim.
Basically you got yourself into a mess.
Each company is going to reference the “other insurance” condition of the policy, which basically states they are off the hook if there is other insurance available for your vehicle.
So, make the claim with both companies and see what they have to say.
And if this is the THIRD time your vehicle was stolen and going to be the THIRD claim you are making on your parents policy, I would not be suprised if that company drops you after this anyways.
