Is it permissible to enter into a private agreement with someone after a minor car accident?

I had caught a small collision with another car yesterday on my way to a flight. Both cars suffered scratches and damage to mirrors, but otherwise fine, no injuries ever. Is it wise, the other guys and try to conclude an agreement where we can not be achieved on the participation of insurance companies and pay our own loss? Or would that leave me vulnerable if subsequently decided to lodge a complaint? There were no witnesses, and we probably take both at fault, we exchanged information, but I have not yet contacted him, that I am abroad at the moment.

Once you bypass the official police report, either party may change his mind and to reconsider the case. Then you have to continue. The filing of a claim at a later date, without the police he said she said argument. Get the police involved, if you choose to bypass the insurance process, you have to prove one way, what happened.
