Filing a claim is the notice you give to your insurance company that some sort of damage has occurred to the insured vehicle. It does not mean that there was an accident per say. It can include; vandalism, cracked windshield, theft etc.. Some insurance policies even cover items stolen from the vehicle.
If you had an accident the insurance company will ask for the other parties info (name, drivers license, address ph#) the name of their insurance company and a police report. The officer that responded to the scene should provide you with a file/report # to provide to your insurance company.
You should always file a claim ASAP. Do not wait more than 48 hours to call your insurance carrier. Waiting longer makes you look bad in an accident situation.
